The quarry is known for its high-volume of graffiti written across the lower portion of the walls and coupled with that, shady characters have been seen lurking about from time to time. Take a right and look for the quarries on your right hand side. Continue onwards until you hit Ricciuti Drive. Take I-93 South to Exit 8 (Furnace/ Brook Pkwy/Quincy). If you can master the graffiti-smear technique, you’ll likely find yourself cruising to the top of the route. Years of repetitive spray painting have created an exceptionally smooth climbing surface, making the intro sections to many of the rock climbs much more difficult than they might initially seem from the ground. “Getting past” the graffiti can be difficult, and not just ethically. If you can get past all of the graffiti that is sprayed ad-nauseum across the walls, you will likely find yourself pondering the unique climbing nature of man-made quarrying. There are a plethora of routes considering this crags size and location to the city, so its not uncommon to see the parking area loaded up with climbers’ vehicles. There are also areas to set-up slack lines and high lines across some of the cliffs, making the Quarries a fun place to not only rock climb, but also explore other types of outdoor adventures. Someone who has a little more experience on rock would do well to head over to J-Wall and climb the classic "Ladder Line", a solid 5.11. For a good introduction on what the area has to offer, the beginning climber may find themselves on "Black Knight" or "White Knight", both rated 5.5 and both located on the S-Wall crag. Navigation around the quarry is relatively simple- all the crags are lettered alphabetically from A through S, starting with A at the western-most face. It is also a great place for climbers who are still learning the sport to hone their skills before heading to larger and more out-of-the-way locations. What Makes It GreatĮven if you get stuck in traffic heading there, Quincy Quarries is a super reasonable afternoon climbing destination. At only a 20-minute drive southeast of the downtown area, there a number of routes spread over 21 small crags that have been enjoyed by the public since the closure of the quarry in the early 1960's. Loaded with dozens of moderate top rope and traditional climbing lines, Quincy Quarries is a great place to rope up in the Greater Boston area.
